Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, HBO Max, Disney+. What do these things all have in common? We use all of these within our smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. Back in 1975, the case was different. People used something called Betamax. The Betamax was a cassette form used to watch videos at home. This product was made by SONY and was released in Japan on May 10th, 1975, and released in the united states 6 months later. Betamax was on the better quality side of cassette tapes as it was more durable, and the picture was clearer. Its #1 competitor was VHS which was made by JVC and was released in 1976, just about a year later than the Betamax. What makes viewing movies and TV so different from today and 50 years ago is that now, we can watch whatever we want whenever we want anywhere but 50 years ago, you could only watch whatever you had on a tape at your house. A down factor to Betamax is that because SONY produced it, they made it where you could only use SONY products with it. Customers were not a huge fan of this because as fantastic as the quality was, SONY products were pretty costly.
